In 1956, a casual bet between two millionaires eventually pitted two of the greatest golfers of the era-Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan-against top amateurs Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi.

The year 1956. Four decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the ten-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery has just made a bet with fellow millionaire George Coleman. Lowery claims that two of his employees, amateur golfers Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi, cannot be beaten in a best-ball match, and challenges Coleman to bring any two golfers of his choice to the course at 10 a.m. the next day to settle the issue. Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with his own power team Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with fourteen major championships between them.

In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day-legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played-comes to life with powerful, emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

"I’m 60 years old and loved and played golf for over 20 years until severe back problems forced me to quit (along with all the other sports I love, especially running). I knew all four players in this story except for Harvie Ward, whom I had never heard of. Since the game the book is about took place in 1956, I wasn’t even born yet so I never saw any of the players play. But of course I knew who Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Ken Venturi were. Ken was still announcing golf on TV when I was younger and I knew Mr. Nelson as the old gentleman who would open the Masters with a ceremonial first drive. The only thing I knew about Ben Hogan’s life I learned from the movie “Follow The Sun”, which I didn’t realize was such a poorly shallow rehash of Hogan’s life. But that was really all I knew about them and it’s really a shame that you could live for 60 years, love golf and NOT know this story (or more about the men in it). I think I remember reading that they were making a movie based on this book but if not, they really should. The movie “The Greatest Game Ever Played”, based on the book of the same name (and coincidentally written by the same author) is the best golf movie in existence in my opinion. When I was a teenager, even Arnold Palmer was past his playing prime and so was Jack Nicklaus except for his amazing Masters victory at aged 47 (I can’t swear to his age but for an athlete he was old and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way at all). There is a postscript to this book and it was, for me at least, a must read. I’d recommend reading this book to the very end since it tells of the man and woman who actually designed and built Cypress Point. The guy who designed it also designed a little course called Augusta National. Buy this book and read it. You won’t regret it even if you don’t play golf. My only regret is that I didn’t know this story or about Cypress Point when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton early in my Marine Corps career. If I had, I would have made the drive just to see the course even if it wasn’t possible to play it."

  • I don't play golf but my husband and son do so I read this book to be able to discuss it with them. I was surprised to find that it was a wonderful read that gave me real insight to the people who played the game for all the right reasons. I loved hearing about how some of the women influenced the game and the description of Cypress Point. It is amazing to know how the game got its start in America and how much it has improved over the years. Very enjoyable.
  • This is my favorite golf history book.

Golf and baseball are two sports that translate best into good literature. The Match is reminiscent of Peter Gammons’ Beyond The Sixth Game because it’s primary thesis is that The Match involving Hogan, Nelson, Venturi & Ward - like the Red Sox - Reds game in the 1975 World Series - changed the sport for ever.

The biographies of the four men at the center of The Match, which biographies are presented in the book, are compelling. The backdrop of Cypress Hill is special. I recommend reading it by referring to a map of each hole of the course. You can pinpoint each shot, which Mark Frost presents in detail.

An added bonus is the story of Marion Hollins, the woman behind the development of
    Cypress Hill and later Pasatiempo.

I can not say enough about this wonderful book. All the more so because The Match was played on the day of my birth - January 11, 1956.
  • I read this book because after seeing the film "Greatest Game Ever Played," I wanted more information on the various players in the U.S. Open that is the subject of the film. This book is filled with historical significance about the beginning of professional golf, and the details of this particular match, two professional versus two amateurs, are both interesting and informative. The writing is spare (think a Clint Eastwood film) but in this instance, the word is worth a thousand pictures (as opposed to a picture being worth a thousand words). After reading this book, I ordered "Greatest Game Ever Played" knowing the writing was to my liking.
  • Was introduced to Mark Frost through his fantastic book, The Greatest Game Ever Played (the movie does not do it justice) and bought this to replace my copy I had bought a few years ago, lent out and have yet to have returned. This book is able to wind golf history, Hollywood and an incredible four ball match seamlessly in a way that you will want to keep reading it. I have never played Cypress Point but felt I was right there with each shot. It was if I was walking the fairways with an old friend who, in between shots, tells you a little side story as to the history of each player and how he had arrived here. In recently re-reading it I had forgot how much I had enjoyed it the first few times I read it.
  • One of the most entertaining books I've read in quite some time. The book was very well written and held my interest throughout. What made it even more interesting was the way the author interspersed the stories of the main characters with the story of this ultimate golf match between the two best amateurs of the time against arguably the two best pros of the time. The hole-by-hole description of the match was so vivid it was almost like watching it on TV.
  • The author is a genius in compiling so much detail in the lives of so many complicated, diverse individuals that make up this story, and make it readable and appealing throughout. When the main book is done and finished, the author spares no expense in enriching the reader with more history behind the building of the three main golf courses. There is so much to be learned about the history of the Monterey Peninsula and afterward I had a feeling of nostalgia and a yearning for the “old days,” when Bing Crosby, was the official greeter of the Clambake. I, for one, feel enriched by this book and I highly recommend it. My Thanks to the author.
  • There was nothing to dislike about this book except that it had to end. It's not only one of the best books about golf I have read, it's one of the best books I've read. My dad was an excellent golfer who might have had pro talent, but had a family to feed. He was golfing at the same time this book took place and loved a game that many years ago I learned to love, too (even though I was a girl.)

Puppy Crate Training Your StepbyStep Guide Audible Audio Edition Jack Rees Matyas J Books Reviews

  • This book is simply FANTASTIC.
I have been crate training dogs for 6 years since we rescued Skipper a Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher cross. In 2012.
When we adopted Skipper he was almost feral (had been in a hoarding situation 40 dogs in a small yard

In two days he was completely potty trained. in a few weeks Skipper was a happy well adjusted pet who knew a dozen tricks even “Good night “ where he would crate himself for the night.

This book is great with tips and tricks to acclimate the dog to the crate, to never use the crate for punishment, and LOTS more!

I am a major fan of crate training.
  • This book was very informative and a easy read. I am surprised how fast our puppy took to the crate training. We had a puppy years ago that almost hung her self trying to get out of a crate we made for her. Fortunately she is fine. This book has lots of detail. I beleive that mishap with our first puppy would never have happened if I read this book back then. I also never had a pair of shoes in my house that had the heel attached to the shoe. Puppy chewing. Years later different puppy much more informed humans , there are no soiled carpets, all my shoes are undamaged, and we have a puppy who actualy likes his crate and goes in it on his own. I beleive this book not only helped with crate training our dog, but also taught him to be calmer when home alone or with company if he's no where to be found chances are he is in his bedroom (the crate).
  • Puppy training...we all love it. This book give practical tips on what to do those first weeks and months of puppy training. Our 10-week old husky is nearly house-broken...that is a nice Christmas gift. Book is wonderful and well written
  • This book is really great ! I like this book .It has a lot of useful information that can get you off and running with your new pet.its really helpful book .thanks author
  • Generally speaking, I think this is a knowledgeable book to read with respect to puppy training. The kindle book shares brilliant knowledge to me in the form of fantastic, useful point by point sections that I truly gained from. Thanks author .
  • The book had good tips for puppy but the editing should have been a bit more careful. Lots of typos and incorrect grammer.

A compelling defense of hormone replacement therapy, exposing the faulty science behind its fall from prominence and empowering women to make informed decisions about their health.

For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was hailed as a miracle. Study after study showed that HRT, if initiated at the onset of menopause, could ease symptoms ranging from hot flashes to memory loss; reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, and some cancers; and even extend a woman's overall life expectancy. But when a large study by the Women's Health Initiative announced results showing an uptick in breast cancer among women taking HRT, the winds shifted abruptly, and HRT, officially deemed a carcinogen, was abandoned.

Now, sixteen years after HRT was left for dead, Dr. Bluming, a medical oncologist, and Dr. Tavris, a social psychologist, track its strange history and present a compelling case for its resurrection. They investigate what led the public -- and much of the medical establishment -- to accept the Women's Health Initiative's often exaggerated claims, while also providing a fuller picture of the science that supports HRT.

A sobering and revelatory read, Estrogen Matters sets the record straight on this beneficial treatment and provides an empowering path to wellness for women everywhere.

"I just finished reading Estrogen Matters. Sound of trumpets. And with the usual 15 "must reads" piled up on my bedside table. What this book now needs is its selection as required reading in a med school course. In a perfect world, the AMA would see that every gynecologist, if not every internist, has a copy. My own copy now goes to my 47-year-old granddaughter, who's just the right age to read it."

  • I saw Dr Harriet Hall's review of this in a recent edition of Skeptical Inquirer & could not be more grateful to her or the authors. I began menopause at about 50 & shortly after was prescribed pharmaceutical HRT, which worked wonders until my Gynecologist moved out of state 5 years ago. Every reputable doctor I've asked since to prescribe HRT to me has said, "It would be malpractice for me to give a 55+ year old woman more HRT." I gave up because having had a brief stint of "Bioidentical" HRT, I can tell you it's dicey, the dosages are uneven & oh yeah completely unregulated. It's like your cousin Ralph whipped up your meds up in his kitchen - what could possibly go wrong!?! So = Thanks WHI for nearly ruining my life! For the past 5 years I've suffered horribly & as it turns out, apparently unnecessarily due to a slightly elevated risk of strokes or breast cancer. My life has barely been worth living since I developed every single side effect of low estrogen, progesterone & testosterone. I've been suicidal, depressed & anxious to the point I nearly lost my soulmate of 30 years from an absolute total lack of libido & constant talk of wanting to die. It's now been 2 weeks since my first Premarin & micronized progresterone pills & I'm already starting to feel good again. My gratitude knows no bounds & by the way, if I have a stroke or heart attack now at least I'll die happy!
  • I just finished reading the book, Estrogen Matters, and found it to be very interesting. I have been taking bioidentical hormones for about 10 years, and I agree that estrogen matters, a lot. However, Dr. Bluming recommends taking Premarin and Provera. In case Dr. Bluming isn't aware, Premarin in a dosage of 0.625 mg. comes at a cost of $192.14 for a one-month supply, and that's not including the cost of a progesterone which is also necessary if a woman has her uterus. I have my bioidentical hormones made in a compounding pharmacy, which has worked very well for me. The information provided in the book, Estrogen Matters, is very much appreciated, particularly on bones and brains, and I agree with what the book has to say on these important concerns. Most women are in a difficult position when they become menopausal. It's either take hormone replacements or suffer from hot flashes, bone loss and Alzheimer's, all to come sooner or later. Women's bone loss starts as soon as menopause begins; that is, in most women. All this can be helped by taking hormones, and I agree that taking bioidentical hormone replacement has been a great help to my health. At age 70 (I entered menopause at age 53) I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. So I started taking bioidentical hormone replacement, even though I had a very difficult time finding a doctor who would prescribe them for me. I did locate a doctor who was listed in one of Suzanne Somers' books, but I had to drive 6 hours one way to his office. When I started taking bioidentical hormones (estrogen and progesterone), my bone scan showed my BMD in my lumbar spine to be .637. Through taking bioidentical hormones since 2009, my BMD in 2017 was .956. I exercise every day, eat well, and I credit bioidentical hormones with the improvement in my BMD where it is now. I am so grateful to Suzanne Somers and her books for the information she and doctors she interviewed provided for me and for women. I am grateful to Dr. Bluming and Carol Tavris for providing the information they provide in Estrogen Matters. I would like them to know that bioidentical hormones are very helpful, even essential for my bone health. I also at one time took Premarin and Provera. I did not do well on Provera or on any progestin. I have had absolutely no problems with taking bioidentical estrogen and bioidentical progesterone. I think Premarin is too expensive for most women. Health care and pharmaceuticals seem to be available only for the rich. This is not right.
  • I just finished reading Estrogen Matters. Sound of trumpets. And with the usual 15 "must reads" piled up on my bedside table. What this book now needs is its selection as required reading in a med school course. In a perfect world, the AMA would see that every gynecologist, if not every internist, has a copy. My own copy now goes to my 47-year-old granddaughter, who's just the right age to read it.
  • Estrogen Matters is an important book that will help guide women in talking with their doctors about whether HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is appropriate for them. Many women today fear taking hormones because they are “unnatural” or “unsafe,” but this well-written, thoroughly referenced book shows persuasively why those fears are wrong.

The authors answer many questions that women face What is the relationship between HRT and heart disease and bone fractures/osteoporosis? (It significantly reduces the risk of both.) Does estrogen cause breast cancer? (No.) What does science say about HRT and cognitive function? (It is the one thing that helps women in their later years.) Can women who have had breast cancer take HRT to reduce symptoms of menopause and achieve better health and quality of life? (Yes.)

The authors recount the untold story of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which profoundly changed the way physicians think about HRT and frightened millions of women from taking it; their fascinating and shocking account reveals the WHI’s shortcomings, exaggerated fear-generating “findings,” and statistical deceptions—and the WHI’s own unwillingness to report any good news about HRT.

“In short, I can’t recommend this engaging book more highly — for women in the years before and during menopause, for doctors, and for anyone interested in science and medicine.”
  • I am very grateful for this book. It laid to rest fears that we have been made to believe how harmful hormone therapy can be. I remember vividly the day the WHI report in 2002 came out! It did stop the press! I am in healthcare and found this book to be groundbreaking on this subject and the research/evidence that HRT can save lives. I was most intrigued on the subject of giving HRT to breast cancer survivors and that research studies had been done! That is good news and reassuring to women who really suffer post BC! Thank you, Dr Bluming for sticking your neck out for the well-being of women and trying to get the message corrected.
  • Every woman should read this book. Every man who knows a woman should read this book. It is long past time to correct the myths around HRT and this book is a great start. Thank you to the authors!

Waking Nightmare Hello Neighbor Book 2 Audible Audio Edition Carly Anne West Oliver Wyman Scholastic Audio Books Reviews

  • I'm really glad that there are companies making good books based off of popular children's video games. It gets my older son interested in reading when it relates to something he'd rather be doing instead. The Five Night's at Freddy's books and these Hello Neighbor books are a big hit in my house.
  • I read this book all in one day and oh my goodness. This is only the second in the series and yet I’m convinced it’s the best so far. The characters in this series are very relatable despite it being a horror novel. One of the characters in this book to me, felt slightly underwritten, but I was more or less satisfied with her. Waking Nightmare is great because it gives you hints to the story of the game hello neighbor. Even though this is a video game book, I would recommend Hello Neighbor Waking Nightmare and the first book Missing Pieces, to anyone who likes a decent book
  • Ties loose ends from the game. Pretty good length and very entertaining. If you're a fan of the game I'd definitely recommend this book.
  • Great book Granddaughter loves these books
  • I love this book! I enjoyed the details and the suspense and the creepiness of the story like when he looked at the moon then turned and said, “Children, Come play!”, that part made me shiver. The drawings were fun to look at. I am waiting for the next book to come out. Great Job!
  • My 10 year old loved the first book! He felt like the second book was a bit slower but still really enjoyed it. I know he'll want to continue with the series if more books come out.
  • My 6th grade son says this book is awesome!
  • My son loves these books.

The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant True Story of Infantry Sergeants in Vietnam eBook Jerry Horton Reviews

  • I also was a shake n bake infantry squad leader with E Co. 1/7th Cav. Div. (Airmobile) in 1972. This book was a great way to show what we went through when we got to Vietnam. The Army needed instant leadership for this war. I knew exactly what the author went through in NCOC school at FT. Benning Ga. It was a great read for any grunt from the Vietnam war.
  • I enjoyed this account of A company 1st battalion 8th Infantry of the 4th Infantry Division. It was good to hear it from a shake and bake perspective. I have read a couple dozen biographies from the Vietnam War, mainly Army but some Marine also. This is a good one. Horton tells us about the every day grunt, the man in the foxhole or bunker, the man on patrol and that is what I am looking for. I have only two complaints the first is that story is disjointed and the second is the lack of maps or drawing embedded in the stories. I like to visualize how everything is playing out and it is really hard without aid. As for being disjointed I prefer to read what happened to each group of men in a continuous story rather than parts of the story as it happens throughout the day and night. By the time you get around to finishing your story about the tracers I have trouble remembering where they are and what they have been through.
  • I served in Vietnam in the same company, A-1-8, as SGT Horton albeit several months later. However, I was fortunate not to have experienced combat as severe as that which Horton describes here. His combat accounts are vivid and well worth the read.

Nevertheless, there are about 200 pages to get through before that combat. Then roughly 150 pages are dedicated to the single battle which is the crux of the book. This is followed by another 100 pages of addendum on the March 1969 campaign. The middle section is engrossing.

If you read this book to discover what is was like to be an infantryman in Vietnam, you will be rewarded. If, however, you expect a history of the Army's shake 'n' bake sergeants you will be disappointed; this is strictly one man's story. As noted by others, the book is in dire need of a competent editor.

This book is much like the war it describes, lackluster until the fighting begins. None of that should diminish the sheen of SGT Horton's two Silver Stars nor the obvious depth of research that he put into producing this book. I'm sure that it was a labor of love. And every account of the history of the Vietnam experience is important.
  • Very informative accounts of actions while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Horton tells of his life before, during, and after his actions in combat while serving as Sergeant 1968 to 1969. This is a very detailed account of all he experienced and all he witnessed while in county. One of the better reads of service in Vietnam!
  • Since the end of the Vietnam War, a plethora of books has been written by veterans trying to make sense out of the quagmire that American found itself in during the 1960s and early 1960s. Each one of these personal accounts of the war offers unique insights and at times for the veterans writing them, they are cathartic in many ways for these veterans old ghosts are finally laid the rest and emotional scars healed.

What makes Jerry Horton's memoir of the war, The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant, memorable and poignant is that he describes how he became a part of the Army's program to fast-track personnel to become squad leaders to replace personnel wounded or killed. Horton has to overcome all sorts of obstacles, not the least of which is earning the respect of his men who must be led by a sergeant who has no combat experience.

This is a powerful book of war and the camaraderie between "grunts" who watch out for each other. Although the expression, "I couldn't put this book down" might be overused by reviewers, it is most definitely apropos here. There's this slow, suspenseful build to Horton's memoirs as you follow him and his men into the bush where danger is all around. And when the fighting starts, you are right there in the middle of it, feeling the danger and hoping that Horton and his men survive.

Thank you, Mr. Horton, for telling your story and the story of your men.

    Jeffrey Miller,
    The Panama Affair
  • After reading literally hundreds of first-person accounts of ground combat in Vietnam, Mr Horton’s book is in my personal top five and I would warmly recommend it to anyone wishing to understand both the physical and emotional journey the combat soldier goes through in a war as well as the spiritual journey he endures in the “peace” after.
This book and this man’s life brings my favorite poem to mind
    You cannot pick your battlefields;
    God does that for you
But you can plant a standard
    Where a standard never flew.
    Well done, soldier, well done!
