Clare of Assisi The Lady provides new translations of ClareÂ’s writings and related primary sources, revised and new introductions from earlier editions, as well as previously unpublished documents to chronicle the life of Saint Clare. The first section presents ClareÂ’s Letters, Testament, and Blessing. The second section includes the papal texts that prompted Clare to write her own Form of Life. The third section contains biographical writings about Clare beginning with Cardinal HugolinoÂ’s 1220 letter and ending with the Legend of Saint Clare. The book concludes with a dossier of documents, many translated into English for the first time, from the papacies of Honorius III, Gregory IX, and Innocent IV.

Clare of Assisi The Lady Regis J Armstrong 9781565482210 Books Reviews

  • This is the best text on Clare and the early Claretian sources and writings. If you want to understand the life of St. Clare, you must get this text, as you cannot truly understand her without reading her own writings, which this book focuses on. It also has all the early texts and sources on her life, including the Process of Canonization, which is not hagiography, as the witnesses gave sworn testimony as to what they saw and experienced. Excellent introduction, commentary throughout, and editing work. This was my main source for my book on St. Clare. Serious kudos for Fr. Armstrong!
  • Great reference book on Clare. As a Secular Franciscan I teach others and am able to use this book as a reference as well as a book for others to read.

  • Beautiful book. I love it.
  • This book is an essential resource for those who want to study, in English, the life and historical significance of Clare of Assisi. It contains a wide variety of primary sources related to her life. These include, of course, Clare's own writings. Each of the primary documents comes with a brief, helpful introduction written by an expert. Above all, Regis J. Armstrong, the editor and translator, deserves thanks for his work on this important project.

The first edition of this book came out in 1988. Then, 1993 marked the 800th anniversary of the birth of Clare. That milestone came right after cultural changes of the 1960s and 1970s sparked new interest in the lives of historic women. That combination generated long-overdue scholarly attention to Clare. Since then, this book has been edited and republished twice. The 2006 edition is the biggest and best so far. The arrangement and physical layout of the book is superb. In short, you couldn't ask for a better basic tool for exploring who Clare was and what her life means to the history of Roman Catholic sanctity.
  • This is certainly a must-have volume for anyone interested in early Franciscan writing!!
