It is my hope that this carefully selected set of pieces will offer guidance and clarity to both students and teachers of classical guitar. Now that music is available in such quantity and ease it is more important than ever to have a clear path laid out that will offer the possibility to explore the repertoire without putting up walls of frustration along the way. After working with several thousand guitarists online it has become clear that studying a piece of music that is too difficult can be one of the biggest impediments to learning and also the joy of music making. More often than not, students who experience struggle will put themselves at fault. However, I believe that a curated selection of music that is arranged in a progressive manner can avert frustration, foster steady progress, and make for a joyful learning experience. At the heart of this collection is a desire to foster joy and a sense of accomplishment. It is that joy that most likely brought you to the classical guitar in the first place. Each piece has been chosen because of musical, technical, and pedagogical reasons. The collection as a whole makes up the repertoire component of the curriculum at Classical Guitar Corner Academy and has been worked on diligently by a dedicated community of guitarists around the world. This edition is in standard notation and contains 123 pages. There are 52 pieces in total. Each grade is clearly marked and each piece has a brief set of instruction to help with study and focus. Composers include Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, J.S. Bach, Napoleon Coste, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, Agustin Barrios, Mauro Giuliani, Robert De Visee, Domenico Scarlatti, Gaspar Sanz and more.

"I started studying classical guitar at Simon Powis’ on-line Classical Guitar Corner Academy (CGCA) just over two years ago. These pieces are the same as used in the coursework, so I have already had experience with them into Grade 3, my current level.

I ordered this book through CGCA so that I would have years of repertoire collected in one place. Additionally, the “Instructions” section at the start of the book describes what to focus on for each piece each by grade. I recheck these sections as I learn new pieces to get the most from my effort. It’s great to have all of this in a single book."

Graded Repertoire for Classical Guitar Progressive Pieces from Beginner to Advanced Dr Simon Powis Books Reviews

  • I purchased this book through Dr Powis’ online academy and just opened it this morning. The book itself feels sturdy and well constructed. The music is in a nicely sized font that can be seen from a good distance from my stand. And even better is that there is a good amount of spacing between lines for me to add in any annotations that I want for the music! I have reems of loose leaf scores that can now visit the shredder. I expect this book will take up permanent residence on my music stand!
  • The look, feel and utility of this publication are exceptional, and the progression of difficulty of the repertoire from Grade 1 all the way through Grade 8 make it the perfect companion for Dr. Powis’ progressive “20 Practice Routines For Classical Guitar”. Teachers and students alike will find in these two volumes the perfect match between graded repertoire and the technical exercises necessary to perform each piece within each grade. And instead of having to purchase eight different books, one for each grade, sufficient repertoire is provided in this one volume to enable a student to advance through all 8 grades. Advice is provided on how to use the book, where to start, when to progress from one grade to the next, how to approach and work on every piece, and a link is provided to free performance videos of pieces included in the book. Dr. Powis’ preferred fingerings are included and the size of the font used for the notation is quite large compared to most music in my collection, making it very easy to read. Finally, I love the spiral binding, which makes it easy to open and lay flat on my music stand.
  • I teach classical guitar as well as acoustic pop, folk, and rock guitar. I have a wonderful fundamentals classical book for my students; but beyond that, it has not been possible to find well-graded music all in one book with a matching technical routines book. "Graded Repertoire For Classical Guitar" in addition to "20 Practice Routines" creates a complete curriculum of technical skills and practical application with lovely music selections that students enjoy. The music starts at Grade Level 1 and goes through to Grade 8. All in one book! The author was also thoughtful in leaving some pages intentionally blank - hence, students need not turn pages during playing. These books make my work easier. My students are well organized (no sheets of music everywhere), the curriculum is affordable for parents (they need only to purchase the two books), and it's a breeze for me to keep track of student progress. Finally, a wonderfully, organized curriculum that takes teachers and students on the exciting journey of classical guitar!
  • This is an excellent book for the classical guitar student. The paper it's printed on is high quality. Plenty of room for one's own notes without cluttering up the printed score. The selection of repertoire is divided into grades that get progressively more complex as the student's skills develop. What I particularly find most useful is for each grade, Dr. Powis includes notes that explain a little about each piece and give instructions on what to pay attention to when practicing (finger alternation, voicing, control and timing, etc). This give each piece a focus for the student so there is a goal to work toward.
In terms of the individual repertoire pieces, all the great composers are represented (Sor, Carcassi, Giuliani, Bach, etc). I imagine this would be an excellent workbook for guitar teachers to use with their students as well. Overall a top quality addition the classical guitar community.

  • Received my book from Classical Guitar Corner this morning and I couldn't be more pleased. The previous review said it all.
