John Owen’s writings, though challenging, are full of rich spiritual insights. In this unabridged volume, editors Justin Taylor and Kelly Kapic have edited three of Owen's classic works―Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers, Of Temptation The Nature and Power of It, and The Nature, Power, Deceit, and Prevalency of Indwelling Sin. They have updated the author’s language, translated the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and footnoted difficult or unknown phrases, all without sacrificing any of Owen’s original message. These three treatises on temptation, sin, and repentance are theologically robust and insightful while also being accessible to modern readers. Overcoming Sin and Temptation will help a new generation benefit from the writings of this remarkable Puritan. Now redesigned with a new cover.

"I'm not too far into the book yet (I'm still reading the Mortification of Sin), but it has been fantastic so far. Owen's writing is thought provoking and deeply enriched with knowledge every professing believer should know and practice. The writing language and style can seem a bit daunting at first, however once you begin to understand how Owen writes it becomes much easier to understand. Amazing book!"

  • I'm not finished with the book because Owen was a man with an impressive vocabulary and some of the words carry a different meaning in their original context and that is why I'm so glad that Kelly Kapic and Justin Taylor were studious enough to give more explanation in their footnotes. John Owen had a real gifting from God to have so much insight. At times, it amazes me how much insight he has of the nature of human sin. As a Christian who has read a good number of books over the years on the subject of battling sin, this one missed my attention. I will say you should be a person who does enjoy the challenge of reading classical Christian literature because you will need to consult a dictionary on occasion but if you have an interest to truly analyze your personal sin, then I would highly suggest you consider reading this book.

I would really like to find other men who could have an interest in discussing the content of this book online. Maybe a facebook group or simple email exchange. I'm open to thoughts on this. I think this could be helpful and motivating and could help clarify some of the topics that Owen tackles.
  • I consider myself an avid and accomplished reader, but the book took me 6 weeks to complete and I'm going to start over and read it again. It isn't an easy read. John Owen not only uses long sentences (sometimes 60-95 words) painstakingly to build on the logic of a thought, but the structure of the book is overly thorough. If you are serious about the topic (and you should be) this is one of the most important books you can read. Do it.
  • This is a very in depth book. Is wonderful and tremendous, but very hard to read. You will have to read sections over and over to really get an understanding.
  • I thought this was a how to book/self help. Not! It reads like scholarly writing. I’m not in college right now!
  • Book format, rewording, notes and introduction make this much easier to read.

  • It's not as hard to read as one might think. Other titles by John Owen are much harder to read. Perhaps it's because I already read it using the Ages Software version which had MANY typo (scanning) errors. I also have read the entire WORKS of John Owen and I read the King James Version of the Bible so I'm a little use to him. This book gives handy footnotes so we dont have to look so far for definitions of obscure/obsolete words.

Quality paper and binding as well. It's worth the price even though I already have the book in electronic edition (Logos Edition and Ages Software)
  • very deep book, very methodical and spiritually stirring.
