"The book covers a lot of useful information, things I never considered as well. However, the writing style is largely on his personal opinion and experience rather than researched fact. I lived in Japan several years and never experienced some of the problems mentioned."

  • I am a US citizen of Japanese decent, been to JP 8 times and lived there for 2 months in 2015. It was a puzzle even if I been there so many times have so many friends, however after reading this book it explained in a "nutshell" why things can seem so convoluted but there is a "method to the madness". Things make so much more sense now; quite fascinating.
  • The book covers a lot of useful information, things I never considered as well. However, the writing style is largely on his personal opinion and experience rather than researched fact. I lived in Japan several years and never experienced some of the problems mentioned.
  • I’m really glad that I purchased this book. Lawrence gives a very in-depth overview on the exact steps one needs to take to move to Japan and get settled. I’ve always wanted to live there but wasn’t sure I wanted to teach long term. This book gives a great analysis of other jobs that foreigners can get in the long run. This is something that I found lacking in similar books on the subject.

There are also some useful tips on finding an apartment and understanding key cultural differences, so I expect to be able to get use out of the book even after going over there. I just sent some applications using the resume tips provided in the book. I’d highly recommend “Start Your Life in Japan” for anyone interested in moving to Japan.
